In 2020, things were very different due to the COVID Pandemic. At the end of October, the Government announced

From Thursday 5 November, everyone must stay at home, and may leave only for a limited set of reasons.

Undaunted, the technicians at St Mary’s Church put together an on-line ‘Switch On’ event, which went live at the same time as the Lights on the Church and around the Village were switched on

The switch on was again carried out by Councillor Tony Smith who, due to the Pandemic, was serving a second term as Mayor.

Traders, leaders of Village Organisations, members of Sports Clubs, pupils from Schools and Dancers from Phoenix, all performed, "live" on-line.

People were encouraged to watch from the safety of their own homes and enjoy the Lights in person when they went for a walk.

Upton Village Community Group are hugely grateful for the dedication and skill of the team who put the ‘event’ together, recording special thanks to Rachel Hsuan, who edited all the recorded greetings ready for them to be uploaded.

It was a great example of the difference it makes when we work together.
